PETAWAWA RESIDENT LOSES OVER $100,000 IN CRYPTOCURRENCY FRAUD
March 29, 2026

A resident of Petawawa has reportedly lost more than $100,000 in a suspected cryptocurrency investment scam, according to police. Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Upper Ottawa Valley detachment were notified of the incident on March 25 at approximately 1:30 p.m. and have since launched an investigation, which remains ongoing.
Police say the case follows a pattern commonly seen in cryptocurrency frauds, where victims are lured by online advertisements or contacts through social media, dating sites, or search engines promising high returns. In many cases, victims begin with a small investment before being encouraged to commit larger sums through trading platforms or digital wallets controlled by fraudsters. Once funds are transferred, access is often cut off, leaving victims unable to recover their money. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reports that Canadians lost more than $351 million to cryptocurrency investment scams in 2025 alone.
Investigators are reminding the public to be cautious of unsolicited investment offers, especially those that promise unusually high returns or create a sense of urgency. Other warning signs include requests to transfer cryptocurrency to unfamiliar accounts or advice from individuals met online urging investment. Authorities stress that legitimate institutions, including police, government agencies, and financial institutions, will never request payment in cryptocurrency. Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam is urged to contact their local police service or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
